Custom-made culture media for the growth of primary neurons

Neurobasal and Neurobasal-A media were developed in the 90’s by Brewer and colleagues at the University of Alabama to establish serum-free growth and improve survival of primary neurons from embryonic and postnatal brain tissues. Addition of complex supplement B27 to Neurobasal is essential to ensure long-term maintenance of physiological functions and survival of primary neurons.

In addition to custom-made Neurobasal, we offer protein-free, chemically defined physiological solutions that provide brain research scientists with enriched in vitro nutrition for primary neurons. Particularly, our modular culture media can be supplemented with several key metabolites not present in classic Neurobasal. The concentration of amino acids and their derivatives, non-proteinogenic amino acids, inorganic salts, trace elements, vitamins and other components is reduced and/or adapted to their respective physiological levels in human plasma. Our modular culture media and physiological solutions enable the fine-tuning of cell function and metabolism, as they are primarily designed to facilitate the study of the nutritional demands of neuronal cells.

Our custom media and nutrient solutions are available as 1X liquid preparations ready-for-use as well as kits of highly concentrated liquid solutions for the reconstitution of 4, 8 and 20 liters 1X medium. The liquid concentrates are reconstituted with tissue culture water prior to sterile filtration.
