First case study on the production of recombinant proteins with Sf-9 insect cells in chemically defined, protein- and peptide-free SpodOmics minimal culture media.

According to an extensive study led by Philipp Meier, Ina Dittler and Nina Steiger at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), recombinant protein expression via Baculovirus Expression Vector System (BEVS) can be successfully accomplished by cultivating Sf-9 cells in chemically defined protein- and peptide-free minimal media developed by Cell Culture Technologies.

Unlike most commercially available insect cell culture media, Cell Culture Technologies’ SpodOmics media are exclusively made of small molecules of non-animal origin. The study suggests that the very simple SpodOmics medium formulation may have beneficial impact on both upstream and downstream operations by decreasing bioprocess costs dramatically.
